Groundhog Day (1993) - Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a Pittsburgh weatherman who also happens to be a real jerk. Sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he soon finds himself living the same day over and over. Years go by, and slowly Phil begins to change for the better, vowing to win the love of lovely TV producer Rita (Andie MacDowell). Murray is in top form as he masters the art of ice sculpting, repeatedly commits suicide, and even learns to play the piano like a pro.

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) - A fictional account of the Nuremberg Trials that took place after the conclusion of World War II. Four judges stand trial for their action during the Nazi regime, and a military tribunal is assembled to hear their case. An outstanding courtroom drama starring Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell (in an Oscar-winning performance), and Montgomery Clift.

L.A. Confidential (1997) - Based on the crime novel by James Ellroy, this modern classic is set in a 1950s Los Angeles brimming with corruption and violence. Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and Guy Pearce star as three L.A. cops caught up in the middle of all the seediness, each working on their own agenda. Kim Basinger won an Oscar and revived her career by playing a prostitute who resembles Veronica Lake, and other key performances are provided by James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, and David Strathairn. A gritty look at cops and cons, with the line between the two often being blurred.

Wild Strawberries (1957) - Director Ingmar Bergman turned out this tale of optimism and self-discovery revolving around an elderly doctor (Victor Sjostrom) reflecting on his past. Considered one of his best films, Bergman wrote the screenplay while hospitalized.

Network (1976) - A scathing satire of mass media, Network is still all-too-relevant in this modern age of tabloid journalism and confession culture. A television network struggled with falling ratings, but they get a boost when a normally sedate newsman (Peter Finch) has an on-air nervous breakdown and begins ranting like a madman. The network takes advantage of the chaos, and soon this modern-day prophet has people sticking their heads out the window and shouting "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" Meanwhile, a slimy producer (Faye Dunaway) tries to develop a network show about terrorism, eventually creating The Mao Tse-Tung Hour. Also starring William Holden, Ned Beatty, and Robert Duvall. Nominated for 10 Oscars, Network would win for Best Screenplay (Paddy Chayefsky), Best Supporting Actress (Beatrice Straight), Best Actress (Faye Dunaway), and Best Actor (Peter Finch).

#5. Into the Sun

A fighter pilot on active duty overseas has to put up with an annoying movie star following him everywhere - even into combat - as research for his new film role.

Few people have ever heard of (or can find a copy of) Into the Sun, which is a shame, because it's one of the cleverest, funniest films in the genre. A World War I fighter pilot stationed with the famous Lafayette squadron in France struggles to fend off the Germans and protect the French woman he's falling in love with.

This is a must-see for anyone who thinks biplanes are boring. The greater danger these pilots faced because of the fragility of their equipment makes the dogfight sequences in Flyboys some of the most tense and harrowing in the genre.

In the summer of 1940, a small group of British pilots fight desperately to keep the Nazi Luftwaffe from bombing their country into submission and opening the way for a land invasion.

There is only one word for the aerial sequences in Battle of Britain: amazing. With so many planes in the air, it looks like a nest of angry hornets, and the best part is that they're all real. There was no CGI in 1969. The story is a bit confusing for people who don't know their history, but the massive dogfights more than make up for it.

A cocky young fighter pilot gets his chance to go up against the best pilots in the Navy when he's chosen for the fighter weapons school nicknamed "Top Gun."

It's very 80s, especially in the soundtrack, but hardly a minute goes by where we're not treated to heartstopping aerial action. Always a solid pick.

If you choose to challenge yourself to figure out what the hell is really in the box at the end of Seven, you're running the risk of legitimate brain explosion. The simpler the better.

- War Movies - often times hard enough to watch on your best day, war movies are straight up brutal when you're hungover. Not only are the characters out there serving their country, being all "America's finest", which can make you feel like more of a loser, but the gore factor is dangerous territory. The only blood you're going to want to see on a caveday is the delicious cooked kind dripping from your medium-rare cheeseburger.

- Movies with a Homeless Protagonist - Do not, we repeat, DO NOT, make the mistake of choosing one of these Debbie Downers when hungover. Chances are, you already feel shitty enough. You're struggling. Press play on Basketball Diaries you're pretty much asking for a meltdown.

We have determined the worst possible movie to watch when down-for-the-count: The Wrestler. Talk about a "feel awful" movie experience. Mickey Rourke's character is so broken, so busted, drunk, high, down and out, viewing this when hungover will surely make you feel 100 times worse than you already do. Not to be a spoiler (let's be honest, you've had a few years to catch up at this point, folks), but things don't even remotely work out well in the end. Let's be honest. Hilarious at every turn, The Hangover reassures you that no matter how terrible you're feeling in this hungover moment, it's not nearly as bad as these guys have it. You can relate to their perils, yet feel proud that even though you left your cell phone in the cab on the way home, you still have all your teeth and the closest tiger is still safe at the zoo. Despite being sort of a movie about drinking, there are essentially no drinking scenes in the entire movie, so your gag reflex can relax.

2. Iron Man - this flick touches upon many of our good-choice criteria. Derived from a comic book, you can tap into your childhood while marveling (yup, we said it) at the coolest modern day special effects. The fast paced action will keep you occupied while the over the top nature of the plot, gadgets, and fight scenes won't possibly make you feel like you're inadequate; no one's as smart as Tony Stark.

3. Monsters, Inc. - though probably not something you watched as a kid yourself, this movie is an amazing way to nestle into the comforts of childhood cinema. It's stunning to watch, as is the trend with Pixar's masterful films. It's hilarious yet touching, super cute and completely imaginary, so you can truly escape real life for a bit. Relax and enjoy (and maybe check your closet real quick on your way back to the bed, just to be safe).

4. Big Trouble in Little China - martial arts movies have been proven to have a profound effect on the biochemistry of the human brain when undergoing alcohol processing. The cheesy action combined with unprecedented dorkiness is both entertaining and confidence-building. We conducted a double-blind case study testing this theory. Meanwhile, our heroes must go back inside the virtual world to perform various missions, dealing with betrayal and unstoppable enemy agents along the way. The most notable is Agent Smith, played with robotic precision by Hugo Weaving.

Battle Royale (2000) - A highly controversial Japanese film, Battle Royale features an entire class of schoolchildren getting abducted by the government and transported to an isolated island. There, they must fight to the death until only one of them remains. To ensure their cooperation, each student is fitted with an explosive collar. If you've ever wanted to see Japanese teens kill each other with guns, explosives, and knives, be sure to give this one a look.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) - Quentin Tarantino directed this revenge flick that was broken up into two parts. In the first installment, Uma Thurman plays The Bride, a woman who comes out of a lengthy coma to track down the fellow assassins who killed her unborn child and left her for dead. The fight sequences are superb, especially the massive showdown between The Bride and the Japanese crime gang known as The Crazy 88s. Co-starring David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, and Daryl Hannah.

Kung Fu Hustle (2004) - Stephen Chow wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this comical kung-fu tale of a loser who gets mixed up with a crime syndicate. While taking his lumps, he learns to stand up for what's right, even if it means taking on the world's most dangerous assassin. The fight sequences combine a mixture of martial arts action and cartoon silliness, making Kung Fu Hustle a truly unique viewing experience. Both kids and adults will get a kick out of it.

1. My top pick for a mermaid movie is "Splash". Not only is it funny and the plot wonderful, but there is quite a bit of awesome footage of Daryl Hannah mermaiding in the ocean. We can't get enough of that! Keep in mind that this is not a children's movie. It was made in the '80s, and for the most part it is okay for the family to watch. But there is a little bit of nudity (when the mermaid is walking into New York out of the ocean with nothing but her long hair to cover her) and there is some implication of what she and the Tom Hanks character are doing in the elevator, though nothing is shown. The movie is wonderful, with a great story and awesome mermaid footage and lots of laughs, as well as a great romance.

2. My second top choice is "The Secret of Roan Inish". This is a safe, quiet movie the entire family can enjoy. It was made in Ireland, and as such is slower and quieter than most American movies. It is about a little Irish girl who moves to live with her grandparents. While there she unwittingly stumbles upon the mystery surrounding the island the family used to live on, called "Roan Inish" (Island of the Seals). As she slowly solves the mystery, she brings healing and unity back to the family. In this movie the mythical creature is a selkie, not a mermaid. The selkie lives in the form of a seal. On occasion she climbs up on a rock and removes her seal skin, revealing a beautiful woman. So this movie is a little bit different, and you will never look at a seal the same way again.

3. My third favorite mermaid movie is "Aquamarine." This one is geared to the teen crowd. It has nothing unseemly, so the whole family can enjoy it. It's a delightfully different rendition of the classic Little Mermaid story, with a wonderful surprise ending. The mermaid in this movie is different, more like a regular teen girl. There are several good shots of her in the water. The messages in this movie are high quality, such as loyalty, friendship, personal confidence, selflessness and courage. And it is also very funny.

4. Number four of my top mermaid movies is an old black and white classic called "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid." You will have a challenge finding this movie to watch, but VHS versions are available for sale on Amazon.com. All of the underwater footage was filmed in the famous Weeki Wachee Springs in Weeki Wachee, Florida, only a year after this underwater theater opened. Made in 1948, this movie is about a married couple taking a vacation in the Caribbean. The man is almost 50 and is having a mid-life crisis. While on vacation he accidentally fishes up a live mermaid from the sea! Ann Blyth plays the enchanting mermaid and you will love this wonderful film. The only objections a parent might have is the theme of extramarital flirting, and some funny scenes with a guy trying to give up smoking.

5. One that is a little different, and which only recently came out, is a Japanese anime Miyazaki movie called "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea", or simply "Ponyo". In this one the fish-girl is depicted as a goldfish with a human face, which is rather strange. But in an unusual twist, this five-year-old fish-girl has to get the little five-year-old human boy to love her faithfully, or she will turn into sea foam and be no more. It is such a sweet interpretation, these small children learning to love and trust each other in such an innocent way. It is a tale of wonder and courage and should not be missed.

6. My pick for number six is Disney's "The Little Mermaid". It was the movie that got Disney back into the popular movie business again in the 1980s. The music and story are a delight. I remember how enchanted I was when it first came out - it is a delightful mermaid movie, fun for the whole family.

7. Number seven for me is the Russian adaptation of "The Little Mermaid." This 1976 film shows plenty of wonderful mermaid footage under the sea. Back then the swimmers had only small flippers, so they had to ripple their legs in a very quick motion for movement. The underwater scenes are only in the beginning of the movie, but they are marvelous!! (I can't figure out how those swimmers could be in the water with all those jellyfish!!). You can find this movie to rent at Netflix and it is directed by Vladimir Bychkov. Again, this version of Anderson's famous story is a little different, almost a completely new story. Be forewarned that there is nudity in one scene, and portrayals of a witch performing magic. Other than those the whole family will enjoy this one.

8. "Barbie Mermaidia" is a little-kid movie, but the plot is good and the scenes are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the unusual design of Barbie's mermaid tail. In this story the main character has to make great sacrifice, and learns some good lessons. I like this one better than the newest Barbie mermaid movie because of its great message.

9. There was much excitement this year over the new release of "Barbie in a Mermaid Tail." This one has wonderfully fun surfboarding scenes. The mermaid world of Oceana was a little strange - basically a mimic of our materialistic society. This made it funny but in this setting you lose the mystery and magic of legendary mermaids. This is what I call a "fluff" movie - nothing deep, just fun images and a nice little story.

10. My least favorite mermaid movie is a kid movie called "Roxy Hunter and the Myth of the Mermaid." It's about a young small-town journalist named Roxy who gradually discovers her new homeless friend (a beautiful blond) is actually a mermaid. The movie is okay but throughout the entire film there are no underwater scenes or scenes with a mermaid in a tail - none - until after the very end. Then, finally, you see about 10 seconds of the blond mermaid swimming underwater with a gorgeous tail. The story is interesting enough, however, and children will certainly enjoy this movie.

Driving Miss Daisy

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play, this movie tells the affectionate story of the friendship between an older Jewish woman in the 1960's and her African American driver over a 25 year span. The kinship that develops between these two strong willed personalities is at first improbably but over time each realizes they have more and more in common. Both girls are hard working but have had a series of broken relationships through their lives. Played by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, these two friends encounter a few unfortunate turns during their vacation that seem to parallel the events of their lives. It is not exactly a feel-good movie, but it does look at the challenges women face through their lives with an unexpected, thought provoking ending.

This is a wonderful and deeply moving story of lifelong love. It tells the story of a young man and women whose romance is brought to a halt when they are separated by war. The two are reunited later in life and are given a second chance. The great thing about this movie is that it is told looking back from the perspective of the now older man reading to a female friend. The movie features Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gena Rowlands and James Garner whose love with each stands the test of time.
